LOGAN, Ohio -- Family, friends and neighbors honor a local soldier Wednesday who was killed in Iraq last week.

Army Spc. Robert Hartwick was killed Monday, June 6, when insurgents launched an attack on his base in Baghdad.

Hartwick, 20, is from Rockbridge. He is a 2009 graduate of Logan High School.

The combat medic's body came home Wednesday, and the community lined the streets of downtown Logan to pay their respects.

The military procession started at Rickenbacker Air Force Base and ended at the Heinlen Brown Funeral Home in Logan.

The attack, which killed five soldiers, was the largest single loss of life in Iraq for the United States in the last two years.

Killed were Spc. Emilio Campo, Pfc. Michael Cook, Pfc. Christopher Fishbeck, Spc. Robert Hartwick and Pfc. Michael Olivieri. Cook, 27, also is from Ohio.

The soldiers deployed to Iraq in November 2010. They were part of the 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, supporting the development of Iraq forces and the improvement of civilian life in central Iraq

Each of the soldiers had served less than two years and were on their first deployment.

Hartwick's funeral will be Saturday.
