Crime Stories Showcased in Push for DNA Database Expansion

Albany, NY (WBNG Binghamton) As New York's governor continues work to pass a new state-wide DNA database, a new website is launched showcasing the painful stories of those who have been impacted by crime.

It includes both video and written testimony from victims, their families, advocates and law enforcement.

Governor Andrew Cuomo applauds the bravery of those who came forward as part of the project, and hopes it will help convince lawmakers to expand the state's DNA database to include all criminals.

Some of those participants were on hand Tuesday during a press conference to announce the new website.

"In 2001, my mother was bound and murdered in her home. Seven grueling years, an amanzing group of detectives combed the streets, investigated her case. But if it hadn't been for DNA, Xavier Jones wouldn't have been brought to justice," said Tynetta Megginson to the crowd in attendance.

Cuomo's proposal would require anyone in New York State convicted of a crime to submit a DNA sample upon conviction. The current law only allows DNA to be collected from people convicted of a felony but only certain misdemeanors. That leaves the majority of criminals OUT of the databank.
