DEAR EDITOR: I was in an auto shop waiting for a repair job. As the 6.00 p.m. hour approached a woman remarked that she hoped that she could get home in time to watch Ian Alleyne (host of the Crime Watch programme on TV6).
Many Christians can identify with that eagerness to gorge themselves on graphic and gory crime stories. These become the popular subjects of conversations and prayer intentions. Reading of such stories in the daily newspapers borders on addiction. Sometimes I wonder whether it is a case of misery looking for company.
There is a poster on the wall of a particular primary school. It is a picture of three monkeys. The caption reads: “See no evil, hear no evil, do no evil”. This maxim is confirmed by God in Scripture and carries a promise to adherents that who “shuts suggestions of murder out of his ears and closes his eyes against crime; this man will dwell in the heights, he will find refuge in a citadel built on rock, his bread will be given him, he shall not want for water”(Isaiah 33:15, 16).
In Psalm 81: 13-14, God laments the stubbornness of heart that is an obstacle to His divine intervention to subdue crime:
“If only my people would listen, if Israel would follow my ways, at one blow I would defeat their enemies and strike at all who attack them”
Thus says the Lord! God bless!
