The war on crime is taking many avenues today. From increased police presence to community awareness programs, cities are pulling no punches when it comes to winning this war. One position that has been developed is the crime prevention specialist.

This is usually a non-sworn position for someone to work as a liaison between police and the community. Before you decide this is a career choice for you, there are some things you need to know.

Education:

It is very important that you know what the educational requirements are for the area in which you are applying. Across the nation, there are differing levels of education you must have to become a crime prevention specialist.

In one state, a two-year degree is required along with one year of relative work experience with no exceptions or substitutions. In other areas of the country for specialized fields such as youth, five years of experience in law enforcement is required. For different states, you may find any combination of the above is required.

Be sure your education and experience line up with the unit you are applying for. Also be prepared for intense background checks, drug tests or even a voice stress test that is similar to a polygraph.

Information you must know about qualifications:

Again, these qualifications may vary from place to place, here is a broad look at the programs that you will need at least some knowledge in:

1) Community crime prevention programs on both the state and federal level; DARE, Neighborhood Watch, Operation ID ( fingerprinting children), and safety and security issues as they pertain to special groups like children and the elderly.

2) General theories and practice of public relations.

3) Reading and comprehension of written reports on a level that allows you to implement actions aimed at meeting team goals.

4) Produce graphic design brochures for training programs and community awareness.

5) Great interpersonal skills that allow for good working environment as well as good community relations.

These are just a few of the skill sets you may need to develop to work as a crime prevention specialist in your area.

Job Duties:

Many job duties come along with this line of work. Below you will find sample job duties that you may encounter as a crime prevention specialist:

1) Meet with community members and or leaders to help resolve issues including neighborhood disputes and grievances. Then identify the conditions that may have caused the problems and a program to fix them.

2) Prepare and deliver training on prevention of common criminal activities such as burglary, robbery, internal theft, shoplifting, fraud, identity theft, sexual abuse and or rape as well as personal protection issues.

3) Work with business and community leaders on methods of preventing crimes including the use of security systems and alarms.

Your Mindset As the Criminal's Ally - Crime Prevention Tips to Stop the Traitor Within

Crime can happen to anyone, right? Not necessarily. While we agree with criminology experts when they say that nobody is exempt from becoming a victim of crime, it is also true that your mindset can actually increase or decrease your chances of actually becoming the target of someone's evil intentions, a conclusion derived from psychological models that deal with the information processing of the mind.

No, we're not talking about wishful thinking here. We don't believe that constantly repeating to yourself: "I am safe, nothing will ever happen to me or my family" will actually have any significant effect.

However, cognitive-behavioral psychologists such as Dr. Albert Ellis and Dr. Aaron Beck have demonstrated in numerous ways that thoughts can actually determine what your behaviors and emotions will be in any given situation. That would explain why everybody reacts differently to the same stimulus: thoughts have the power to make all the difference.

If we extend those conclusions to the field of crime prevention, the logical implication would be that -although your chances of becoming a crime victim cannot be completely eliminated- your repertoire of thoughts can actually put you in a higher or lower risk position in relation to crime. Yes, your mind can act as an internal traitor. And because of that, the first and most basic strategy in any self defense plan should be creating low-risk, crime-smart thoughts...an advice that you and your loved ones should follow in order to stay safe.

Many people (maybe you included) think that they are already crime-conscious enough, so they don't see any need to make further thought modifications. However...When was the last time you saw someone walking slowly and carelessly towards his/her car, talking happily on the cell phone, taking his/her time to take the car keys out of his/her pocket (or purse), completely oblivious of his/her surroundings? Crime conscious...uh? Some people make easy targets out of themselves. But...What actually led that person to act that way?

Taking the cognitive-behavioral model into account, it may be hypothesized that the predominant responsible factor would be a distorted information processing style. In other words, maybe he/she is interpreting that the immediate environment is safer than it might actually be. Psychologically, the "internal traitor" might have taken the form of what experts call "emotional reasoning": a conclusion or inference based on an emotional state. For instance: "I feel safe". However, feeling safe (by itself) is not the same as actually being safe. The "I feel safe" distortion is what led our friend in the aforementioned example to act so carelessly in the first place, and might even be the initial factor in a series of events that led him/her to become a victim of crime. Get the picture?

A variation of the "I feel safe" distortion can be found in cases in which a more crime-conscious individual buys a non lethal weapon that is not as effective as the vendor claimed. The end result would be that the individual will feel "really safe" (with a low-powered stun gun or tear gas pepper spray, for instance), without actually being safe. That's why it is important to buy self defense products only from a retailer that offers only the most reliable devices: your life and well-being is at stake.

But what is the "antidote" to the "emotional reasoning" distortion? The first step is to recognize that you don't have to believe every thought that passes through your mind. You can -and must- be skeptical of your own cognitions. While we are not recommending that you invite paranoia into your mind, an acceptable remedy would be replacing your "I feel safe" thoughts with more realistic and pragmatic mind schemas, such as: "Nobody is 100% safe all the time, but I can decrease the chances of becoming a crime victim by always being aware of my surroundings, staying away from potentially dangerous circumstances, and carrying a reliable self defense product that can actually help me if the need arises (such as a TASER, a high-powered stun gun, or a OC pepper spray)". It can be hypothesized that many crime victims would not be so today, had they practiced an exact or similar way of thinking.

The next step would be to practice your new way of thinking as often as possible, specially every time your old pattern of thought emerges. The result should be a more prudent approach to safety, more controlled emotions (which stems from really being more in control of your circumstances) and a decreased chance of actually becoming a victim.

However, the "emotional reasoning" cognition is not the only form the internal traitor might take. Another common distortion is what psychologists call "overgeneralizations": the tendency to draw evidence from one experience or a small set of experiences to reach an unwarranted conclusion with far-reaching implications. For instance: "I've gone to the ATM machine at night quite a few times by now, and nothing has ever happened so far, so don't worry, I will be safe". But just because it hasn't happened so far doesn't really mean that it can't happen sometime, so lowering your defenses is not an appropriate course of action. Remember what criminologists say: Crime can happen to anyone, without exceptions. Decrease your chances of becoming a victim by getting rid of this harmful way of thinking, as soon as possible.

Still a third cognitive distortion can be found in "cognitive avoidance": unpleasant thoughts, feelings or events are actively suppressed or avoided, specially because they are erroneously perceived as overwhelming. That's precisely the reason that enforces the first two cognitive distortions: People fall victims of crime either because they do not wish to consider the possibility of that actually happening or because they minimize or just plainly ignore the fact that nobody is exempt. That's why they don't think, act or get properly protected in the first place, which increases their chances of becoming victims. Don't let that be your case.

Although there are other forms the internal traitor might take, those discussed so far are the ones that we consider to be the most important. These distortions can completely disable your potential of avoiding and/or defending yourself against crime successfully...should potential tragedy comes knocking on your door.

Avoid the aforementioned mental distortions, arm yourself with a first-rate self defense product, and decrease your chances of becoming a victim. To quote Charles Reade (a 19th century novelist): "Sow a thought, and you reap an act; Sow an act, and you reap a habit; Sow a habit, and you reap a character; Sow a character, and you reap a destiny".

Crime Prevention

Crime is a word that invokes both fear and acceptance in society. Statistically your chances of becoming a victim of crime in any given year are actually pretty low. I'm sure this is a great comfort to anyone who has been victimized or knows someone who has been. On the surface many crimes seem random and senseless, but when we take a look at the factors that make up a crime we see a pattern emerge. In order for a crime to occur there are three factors that must be present. They are; Motive, Opportunity and a Victim.

Each of these factors plays an important role in how and why crimes occur. Two of these factors are within your control to influence. Motive is what drives the criminal to commit the crime. Motives are as individual as the criminal and beyond your ability to effectively control. Some common themes are drugs, money, sex, violence, power, domination, etc. That doesn't mean you shouldn't attempt to understand some of the social issues surrounding the psychology of crime. It just means that knowing your attacker is a crack addict with an addiction to feed is the last thing you are worrying about when he is stealing your purse at knife point.

Opportunity and access are necessary for the criminal to commit an offense. Crime is often a business. To succeed it must have timing, location, market knowledge and access to potential customers. Having a good foundation in Personal Safety removes much of the potential for criminals to have access to you. Both timing and location are within your realm of control. Ensure that you always maintain good Situational Awareness. Being able to spot, assess and proactively respond to potentially dangerous situations is much simpler than having to resort to Self Defense or submission when a crime actually occurs.

Victims are the most important piece to the puzzle. Without a victim there is no crime. By removing yourself from the equation, or at least substantially reducing your profile as a potential victim, you will have the greatest impact on how crime will affect your life. This puts a lot of power and responsibility in your hands. Taking steps to reduce your desirability as a potential victim is not difficult. It does demand some education, effort and practice on your part though. You must educate yourself on what you don't know. Contrary to popular belief, what you don't know can hurt you. Take a course in Personal Safety and Self Defense. Learn how to develop and implement a Personal Safety Plan, then practice, practice, practice.

When we teach our courses, participants are always surprised to find when we talk so much about the Adrenal Stress Response. There is more to adrenaline than just "Fight or Flight." This statement is not incorrect, just incomplete. During times of stress or danger the human body generally has 4 available options when adrenaline kicks in. These are; Fight, Flight, Submit or Posture.

Each of these responses is common when a person is placed in a stressful or potentially dangerous situation. The fact is that everyone is affected by the Adrenal Stress Response. The difference is in how individuals deal with it. Each of us fits into one or more of these response types dependent upon a variety of environmental and personal factors. Adrenaline is an amazing hormone, it lets our bodies become supercharged and incredibly strong. Unfortunately it also has a dark side. Adrenaline also causes the "Freeze!" response, dry mouth, rapid breathing, and extreme fatigue. Asymmetric Saturation Training is one method to reduce the effects of the Adrenal Stress Response. This is accomplished by systematically placing students in an Adrenal state during full contact Padded Attacker scenarios. Repeated exposure to the Adrenal Stress Response burns Self Defense techniques into the student's neural pathways and teaches them how to survive a violent attack. This is the same method used by peace officers and the military to train for the realities of combat.

Fight is always the first option listed when this sequence is discussed. It is, however, probably the least used in these situations. The human body is hardwired against harming others of the species. It is what allows us to live in large communities without random violence and murder. The ability to use violent and sometimes lethal force to protect ourselves from harm is easy to discuss but much harder to do. It is important to remember though that there is a portion of the populace that doesn't share your feelings of kindness and lack of aggression towards your fellow man. In my business we call them "Wolves". For the terms of our discussion "Wolf" refers to criminals and other predators.

Flight is the next most discussed option and, in my opinion, the least used or considered. It is also the most prudent and least likely to produce violent results. My philosophy has always been to run if you can and fight if you can't. I've seen countless situations that have deteriorated into violence that you could have seen coming from a block away. Conversely I've also seen people stand back and posture when doing so was obviously not going to turn out well for them.

Posturing is a very successful strategy for dealing with potential violence. Many species posture to make themselves look larger and more aggressive to potential adversaries. Often posturing works as the response cost for the criminal is just too high. It is too risky to take the chance that the individual posturing is not as bad as they are trying to tell you they are. If they misjudge their careers as criminals will be brief and the resultant miscalculation painful.

Submitting is the fourth way that we can react to a stressful or violent situation. In some cases submission has saved lives. Submission as a response to crime often has negative effects on its victims for years after the crime. It is important for survivors of violence to understand that no matter the circumstances that led to their attacks, the responsibility always lies with the perpetrator.

In my world there are three types of people; Wolves, Sheep and Sheepdogs. Wolves are predators and are not afraid to harm you. It is important to know that Wolves don't play by our society's rules, so expecting them to behave as anything other than large, dangerous carnivores is foolhardy. The best way to deal with a Wolf is never to run across its path in the first place. Learning practical Self Defense and Personal Safety skills will go a long way to keeping you off of a wolf's radar.

Sheep, unfortunately, represent the vast majority of society. I use this "tag" because Sheep are prey. To the Wolves of the world, Sheep are there to be eaten. For you, the Sheep that means you are a means to an end for whatever personal motive that drives criminals to commit their crimes. Often Sheep take the "It won't happen to me, I live in a nice neighborhood" approach. Most times they are shocked when crime does happen in their neighborhood or affects them or someone they know in a very personal way.

Sheepdogs are the last category and are what we should all aspire to be. Sheepdogs are not intimidated by Wolves and will actively protect the Sheep. Wolves don't want to mess with a Sheepdog due to the high probability of damage to them personally. We can become Sheepdogs by educating ourselves on the societal causes of crime and learning the skill sets necessary to protect ourselves and our families from the Wolves at the door. And like a good Sheepdog we also need to learn the skills to repel the Wolf when no other option presents itself.

On Juvenile Crime, Causes, and Prevention

Juvenile crime is a blanket term that refers to any of a number of criminal acts which are perpetrated by minors. While adult crime is typically well understood from a criminal psychology perspective, the range and causes of juvenile crime are a bit more vague in terms of our understanding.

In any case, juvenile crime poses a unique threat and responsibility to society to address and prevent before it can cause devastating consequences.

Compounded with easy access to fire arms, exposure to violence in the media, as well as an unstable family environment, the risks for juvenile crime become exceedingly significant.

While many people expect the state to address the issues of juvenile crime, the expected effectiveness of a state sponsored program is not high concerning the prevention of crime, but rather it is focused on the rehabilitation of delinquents after criminal acts have already been executed.

Since juvenile crime begins in the home, it will only be prevented at the societal level. Close knit societies can influence and address the problems facing the youth in a particular area and give them the support they need to reject negative peer pressure.

Part of preventing juvenile crime is by giving youths a suitable substitute to the gang mentality.

That being said, some of the more common state run projects to preclude juvenile crime are state sponsored youth initiatives as well as drug abuse education.

Along with these activities, the state also diverts a substantial amount of tax monies into supplying and maintaining correctional facilities whose focus is the rehabilitation of minors involved in juvenile crime.

No matter what the primary cause of juvenile crime is, the fact remains that it is a significant issue that we need to address as a society.

Crime Scenario and Prevention Measures in Nepal

Crime has an age as old as civilization itself. In this world, it is difficult to find a place where there is no crime. The only difference is the type and the method of crime. Several crime issues such as kidnapping, raping, murdering, drug trafficking, hijacking are rampant everywhere in the world. Crime rates and crime types are different in developed and undeveloped countries. Advancements in knowledge and technology allows people from developed countries to use the law, computer and internet to commit crimes in majority where as in the developing countries we can witness the direct crimes such as murder, kidnapping, raping, girl trafficking etc.

There are several reasons why the crime rate is increasing worldwide. Lack of education, greed, laziness, and poverty are the common reasons for the soaring crime rate. Still there are several other socio-economic issues needs to be dealt in the developing nations. Human rights have been a slogan for the developed countries only. Still there are people in this 21st century where they have no food to eat, clothes to wear and house to live. Education, equality in gender, and safety is way too far in these communities. A society is only safe, crime free and worth living when people have education, and can differentiate between good and bad. The laws: The laws itself is not strong enough in Nepal to control the crime. There are several faults in the law and people are taking advantage of that.
Impunity: Crime rate would be controlled to some content it there was provision against impunity. Even the government officials are responsible for crime and get easily out of that. Due to impunity, people are encouraged to commit even more crime than before because they feel there is always someone to protect them.
Inefficiency of Police: Police in Nepal is way too ineffective. It may be because of the absence of the proper training and modern techniques for the crime detection. One simple case takes years to resolve and people don't even have confidence of police officers. When people even don't believe the police where should they go for justice?
Forensic techniques: Lack of advancement in forensic methods has certainly clouded the cause of crime and is unable to give the proper justification of the crime method.
Slow Court Procedure: The inefficiency of court is the another reason for increasing crime rate. One case takes years to settle down.
Lack of eduction:Lack of education in people is certainly a huge factor to consider because in this condition people cannot decide what is good and what is bad. A good speaker with evil intensions can easily drive these ignorant people by his impressive words and easily encourages them to commit a crime. The interesting thing here is the people who are doing this don't realize that they are committing a crime.

How Crime can be decreased?

I would like to present several ideas how the crime rate can be prevented in Nepal. Child care programs can be designed to improve the personality of the kids and give them the right knowledge about the good and bad things. "Free education programs to all" should be provided so that no child or person is deprived from the right of education. Family support programs can be designed to keep the family united and foster child care. New employment schemes would certainly help is reducing the crime rate in Nepal where there are thousands of unemployed people. New court procedures can be developed and expedite the court efficiency and restructuring of the constitution and law itself to make the straightforward laws eliminating the room for crime.

Criminal justice is the very big term still to be introduced in the poor country like Nepal. The direct services that deal with the crime such as police, prison, court, probation, parole should have specific programs to deal with crime. More focus should be given in increasing police efficiency, 24-7 security services, and advanced training for the crime detection. A society will be only safe and worth living when they eliminate the roots of crime. The ultimate programs to eliminate the roots of crime are education, good child care programs, and advancements in forensic science, laws against impunity, and relief funds in the natural disaster and restructuring of the constitution to increase police efficiency and expedite court service.

Crime Prevention, Safety, and Self-Defense - It's Time We Start Fighting Back!

We should always stay alert to the potential of crime and unwanted violent attacks. It is a violent world we live in today. Many crimes are "at random" crimes and can happen to anyone at any time. The very nature of some of these crimes today is very horrific and just seems to keep getting worse. No one is immune to crime. One way of preventing crime as a whole is for each and every one of us to do their own part individually to protect themselves against crime. My goal is to try and put some form of non-lethal self-defense weapons in the hands of as many people as I possibly can. I am hoping that more people will be willing to play an active roll in crime prevention. And one of the best ways to stop crime from happening is to carry a non-lethal, incapacitating form of self-defense with you wherever you go and keep it very close at hand in case an emergency situation should arise and you need to use your self-defense.

There are many non-lethal types of self-defense available to carry that will allow you to incapacitate an assailant temporarily and not permanently. You can have the advantage of stopping an attacker without actually taking their life. And when you stop an assailant from violently attacking or robbing you, you have also helped to lower the overall crime statistics in our whole society. This means that you are also doing your part to help prevent crime. And at the same time you may be saving your own life or at least saving yourself against great bodily harm, assault, robbery, aggravated battery, rape, abduction, etc. Lowering the overall crime statistics in our society sounds like something that everyone might want to get in on.

I know that I would really appreciate seeing a cut down in the outrageously high number of crimes, missing persons, kidnappings, abductions, amber alerts, assaults, aggravated batteries, robberies, home invasions, etc. You can easily look up some of the numbers in crime statistics reports such as the FBI crime statistics reports. The numbers of crimes each year in America alone is staggering. It would be nice to never become a crime statistic. If everyone would at least try to protect themselves by carrying some self-defense in case of an emergency situation then that in itself should help to cut down on crime. Every life is so very important and effects the lives of so many others. Our society is like one great big network and every single person is a very important part of that network, not to mention how important everyone is to their loved ones whether they realize it or not. You can take preventative measures against crime to prevent yourself from becoming another crime statistic.

It is my hope that you will help do what you can to defend yourself, your loved ones, your employees, your co-workers, and your friends. You can put the odds in your favor and surprise the criminals with a little civil justice. Now is a good time to choose your means of self-defense. Knowing that we all do our part to prevent crime will help everyone to rest a little bit easier. I know I feel more secure and comfortable when I know my loved ones are safe and secure. Let's all do our part to help prevent crime and also try to prevent excessive numbers of missing persons reports and amber alerts. Let's fight back against crime and keep a watch out. I tend to wonder that if many of the past missing persons and victims of crime could have fared a whole lot better if they had only had some type of self-defense weapon with them at the time of their emergency, abduction, attack, assault, etc. - We can't change the past although we can help to put the odds in our favor in the future!)...Your life effects so many others.
