Neighborhood Watch - How it Can Prevent Crime in Your Neighborhood

While the first line of defense in home security is making sure your house has the latest and strongest locks, a neighborhood crime watch can help keep track of criminal activity that may occur outside the home. Strong locks, burglar alarms, and dogs are all excellent for discouraging potential intruders. Burglars want to get in and out of residences quickly and don't want to attract attention by setting off alarms, dealing with dogs or taking time to break through a lock.

But even when homes are well-protected, a neighborhood crime watch can be a vital way to help lower criminal activities in the neighborhood. Many crimes occur that aren't residential break-ins. For instance, it is possible to be robbed in a driveway, while walking on the sidewalk or during a daily jog around the block.

A vigilant neighborhood watch team can add extra layers of security to an area. When started and maintained properly, these organizations can have a major impact on crime rates. Neighbors working as a team learn how to watch for suspicious or unusual activity. By setting up email alerts, they can share information about anything that does happen.

So how do you start a Neighborhood Crime Watch? One of the best ways to begin is by contacting any local law enforcement agencies, including police or other officials who are responsible for your neighborhood and surrounding areas. They are often eager to speak at your first meeting since a neighborhood crime watch helps them, too.

When neighbors and the police work in cooperation, it is a win/win situation for everyone. Police can provide information about how and when to contact them. In some situations, they will regularly patrol neighborhoods until crime rates are reduced. Sometimes crime watches are formed after a rash of robberies or attacks in certain neighborhoods. If this is the case, neighbors may have specific notes or lists of particular concerns.

It is important to discuss these with police or other law officials. They can often offer helpful tips such as being sure to lock the door between the garage and the house, especially when the garage door is up. Little changes like these can make a huge difference.

One of the main ways neighborhood crime watches help reduce crime is by encouraging neighbors to communicate regularly with each other. It is often quickest to do this by email. Some neighbors may be hesitant to report potentially suspicious behavior by strangers in the area for fear of being wrong. All neighbors should be encouraged to error on the side of safety. Not all crimes are reported in the newspaper and neighbors working together can provide updates on anything that has been happening, from vandalism to robberies.

Neighbors who are going to leave town should either alert the entire watch team about this or at least have one or two trusted neighbors who can keep an eye on things. Again, the goal is to make the entire neighborhood safer by improving communication and taking an active part in watching for suspicious activities.

If specific crimes have been happening, set goals for reducing those activities. There should also be regular meetings where everyone can touch base on how things are coming along. If enough progress is made, law officials may give permission for a Neighborhood Crime Watch sign to be posted.

While everyone may be eager to work on several goals at one time, it is easier to have one clear and specific goal. As progress is made, others can be added to the list. Maybe people want to be able to walk or job safely around the block.

Designated members of the crime watch team could volunteer to be outside on certain days or even watch from their windows. Police officers may suggest that joggers and walkers have simple alarms which they can use to alert neighbors if they are attacked. By being pro-active and banding together, a strong neighborhood watch team can make the changes needed to keep crime to a minimum.

As has been illustrated above, a neighborhood watch program can be an effective way of preventing crime in your area. However, in case the would be burglars get past your eyes and ears on the ground it is also a good idea, so that you know what your vulnerabilities are, to have a full home security assessment done. If you live in the Sacramento California area then a professional locksmith such as Roseville Locksmith can provide such a service. What's Anybody Doing to Really Prevent Crime?

I want to know what it's going to take for the people of the United States to help one another fight the war on crime. It sickens me to watch the news anymore, all that gets talked about is headlines of crimes and nothing to help everyone on how to secure there lives for it to never happen again.

It's great to make aware of what's happening around the world. It's always great to educate peoples lives, but what about on how or what to do about preventing it by arming themselves with pepper spray, alarms or stun guns. Nonlethal weapons are made for a reason and that's to defend your life. We are not talking about weapons of mass destruction that can kill in one shot, that anyone can get anywhere off the streets.

Another thing that sickens me today is that we have been working our butt off to get education across the U.S. on how to prepare and educate yourself. Arming yourself to defend against these criminals that are committing these horrific crimes. A few things that need to be pointed out on our schools and the crimes that are being committed in and around them. The education that gets learned from them is how easy it is to bring a gun in to shoot someone. Where were the city police that we are so depended on to protect us? Where are the campus police that are getting paid for what?

The point is these officers cannot do anything till' the crime has already been committed. Another words you have been victimized. Look at all the college websites and other websites that are giving all this education about being aware will save your life. Can someone please tell me what that's going to do for a 100lb college student that's 5 foot tall and has arms the size of two silver dollars going to do if she sees her attacker before he gets to her! I'll throw a couple of scenarios out there.

1. She gets to see herself die before, rather than it be a surprise. What a wonderful thing to add to your murder.

2. If it was just a rapist, not a murderer. She now has given him a reason to murder her, he sure does not want any evidence left to track him down now does he. Another nice additive.

3. Now let's do a scenario of what could happen with the proper education and arming of self defense. She's properly educated to be aware of her surroundings. She notice's the assailant and because she has been properly armed with pepper spray and a personal alarm and what to do with them. She sets off her 130 decibel alarm to alert others, pulls out her pepper spray. And a surprising result of this intelligent young lady. She pulls out her 900,000volt stun gun and gets it ready in the other hand. Now do note that this girl is very small and weak, she makes a perfect target for an attack of rape. Very easy for her assailant to over power and do as he pleases. But with a with pepper spray that shoots on an average of 10 - 12 feet, she never has to even get close to her attacker to take him to his knees. This is not going to be like this with all cases, is where the stun gun comes in for close encounter to where one 3 second touch of that stun gun will immobilize the muscles and nervous system, to render her attacker to be no more harmful than watching paint dry. Now do not forget she summoned for help with her 130 decibel ear piercing alarm. Now the math, 70% of the time the assailant will run just the noise of the alarm drawing attention to him. Criminals do not like that. 85% of the time just blasting the stun gun. The Arc of the electrodes and the sound are enough for anyone with enough sense to say I can't handle something like that. 95% you will not even have to use your stun gun because the pepper spray will stop him in his tracks. Now besides having all that and maybe even some martial arts under your belt. That's how education and being prepared to fight the war on crime should be.

I contacted a few colleges today, to have one reply back to me with remove me from there list. What list? There link is on there website to contact them. Is that not what its there for? Well it's the original thought of the reply basically telling me they don't want to help the children they supposedly are there to educate. I'm still waiting for a reply from all the others to see there response.

There websites only contain awareness, not how to protect yourself. What lock your door and shut your windows? Busting a door down is pretty much a common noise in a dorm room where parties are. How about an alarm that goes off when it gets busted down, now that's not too common. Come on folks, we need to take higher precautions in life to protecting ourselves and our loved ones.

Lets pick on New York for a minute, it is against the law for them to purchase or carry pepper spray. So where are there rights to defend there lives' in a huge crime city like that. And Chicago, another huge restriction on self defense, with a huge crime statistic city. You'll find some restrictions on my website that is asinine to tell U.S. citizens they cannot purchase nonlethal self defense products to defend themselves. Do remember I mentioned that Police cannot help us till we have already been victimized.

Who's making these laws, and who in this world are giving these people the power to say you can't defend yourself against this corrupted country. Who made these people God, and who give them the right to basically run our lives or ruin should I say. Why don't we take a vote for our own safety from the victims of crime and there loved ones that were hurt by the crime that they went through. I think we know what the outcome would be.

Let's talk about the community police or campus police for a minute. What good are they when it comes to crimes? They can't help you til' you are already victimized, raped, robbed or killed. There are an average of 65,000 crime victims a day, where are the police? We need to be armed and ready, well educated and secured for every situation.

Imagine the thousands that are spent on useless crime prevention like campus police, could be spent on pepper spray and alarms for dorm rooms or carrying a pepper spray or personal alarm on the person themselves could do. A lot of good hearted people that did not deserve to be a victim of rape, murder or even robbed could have prevented. Don't get me wrong police are needed on campus and off but it's not enough to prevent most crimes.

At least colleges could secure there campuses by offering to the parents and students the option for them to purchase these items. Why don't they? What are they afraid of? Do they like having there students become victim of crime? A measly 10 to 12 dollar can a pepper spray and/ or a measly 15 to 20 dollar personal alarm could have prevented all this massacre for these precious lives.

How about these families that haven't secured there children for these crimes. And were not made aware of them by these colleges that are there for education. How many parents in there lifetime were a victim of crime that never educated, prepared or armed there children to fight for there lives. I bet not too many, the only thing on there mind were we finally get the house to ourselves after 18 years.

I'm not trying to knock anyone and if I have upset someone then good. That means I've made you think about what's going on around our lives. Now you can be mad, get even with what I've said. I'm not losing any sleep over it. Or you can do what's right and help everyone you love safeguard there life and feel good about it.

Everyone has a right to there opinion, and unfortunately mine had to come out under frustrations while I was watching the news tonight. Home Business Protection is here to help people safeguard there lives. If we don't take action to help one another then these crime rates are going to get worse. Just do me a favor and don't hurt yourself patting yourself on the back when crime rates go down in your area. Because if the rates don't hit zero there's people out there still becoming victims.

To all the people that have taken action to live safe, Good Luck to you. And I hope you live a long healthy and prosperous life.
